Some guests prefer the shorter ferry crossing of, Dover - Calais or travel via the channel tunnel, with a bit further to drive, 6+ hours on the french side.
There are no road tolls applicable in Bretagne (Brittany), however you will encounter some if travelling in Normandy. ie from Calais
French roads are as a rule, very good and certainly without the congestion experienced in the UK.
